Is your furniture truly hand made?
-
Each one of our products is indeed hand made by Amish artisans. This is why we state on our Home Page that no two items are ever exactly alike. In addition, every product we sell is absolutely 100% made in America!

How do I clean the exterior of my cedar chest?
-
We suggest using a light wiping with a damp cotton cloth to remove anything spilled on the chest, followed by drying it thoroughly with another cotton cloth. Products such as Endust on a cotton towel may be used for dusting. If the finish has any scratches, short of having the exterior resanded and re-lacquered (if the the damage is great), we suggest the application of lemon oil, again using a clean cotton cloth. Never apply any solution to inside surfaces, as this will seal the wood and prevent the wood from "breathing".
-
I own a walnut chest with a cedar lining. Do I need to care for it beyond that which I would for a chest made completely of cedar?
-
As a general statement, no. Cedar is more "fragile" in its nature than either walnut, oak or cherry wood, and has less strength. Under like conditions, "cedar" will wear at a greater rate than any of these other woods, while walnut will "wear" the least. Cedar, however, will not rot, nor will insects attack it as they will the other woods. Therefore, other than placing your walnut chest in long term storage in a location that is hostile to the wood, the care for it is the same as for a 100% cedar chest.
-
What things should I avoid with my cedar chest?
-
Never place your chest where direct sunlight will strike it, or in locations that are excessively damp or where air temperatures vary greatly over time. For example, placing your chest under a southern-exposure window sill is not advisable, nor is placing it in a bathroom or in a cold cellar. With repetitive exposure to extremes of sunlight, temperature or humidity (or all three!), the cedar will dry out and possibly de-laminate and crack. There are no repairs for such damage.
-
How do I clean the inside of my cedar chest?
-
If property utilized for the purpose intended, the only cleaning necessary will be an infrequent vacuuming. Never apply any harsh cleaning solution such as bleach, floor cleaner or solvent to bare wood. It is far better to blot up whatever has spilled on the wood, leaving what can't be removed as a small stain than it is to use a harsh cleaner and ruin the wood completely and forever.
-
Is a cedar chest strong enough to be used as a sitting bench at the foot of a bed?
-
Given that one doesn't hop up or down on the chest and is of a moderate weight (150# or so), yes our cedar chests are strong enough to support a person's weight. However, first the casters need to be removed to provide ample surface area to support the weight. We do not suggest in any way that the chest be used as a step stool or as a place to load heavy material upon it.
